Question: "Was the earth created by God or
live in a day of unbelief and doubt of the existence of God
because of the influence of Secularism and Naturalism.
Children are brainwashed in the public school system, and
college students are fed these philosophies in their core
course curriculum in history, philosophy, art and science. Naturalism
can be defined as a view that every law and force operating in
the universe is natural and has no moral, spiritual, or
supernatural forces. Naturalists are often unable to look and
examine the evidences for a creator as they are blind to the
truth (2 Cor 4:4). In this brief article I am going to explain
why the Bible is the accurate and true Word of God, the earth
was created in six literal days, the flood of Noah's day was a
global one, and provide enough evidences for those with an open
mind that God created the universe. My intention in writing
this article is to provide an interest for any serious skeptic
to do further research on these topics, but I do not expect to
convince those that have been blinded, and living in sin, for
that is the work of the Holy Spirit alone.
The Authority of the Bible
Why can the Bible be trusted, and why
is it the word of God? These are questions of many in our
secularist culture. Sadly, many that have these
questions are unwilling to read the books and research the
Bible to discover why it is a true and inerrant work.
The Bible is the best selling book of all time with roughly
eight billion copies in print. There are many books also
claiming to be the word of God, or just as important as the
Bible (the book of Mormon, the Koran, etc.) and so what sets
the Bible apart from these other works?
I believe fully in inerrancy (meaning no errors),
over an infallible guide meaning that the Bible is
true in matters of faith and practice, but does contain errors
in areas of history, geography and science. I will explain
below why the Bible can be trusted not only in faith and
practice, but also in history, geography, and science.
The Bible was written over a span of 1500 years by more than 40 authors in multiple languages and addressing hundreds of topics. But one of the reasons the Bible is unique is that of all these authors from all these walks of life the theme throughout the Bible has been the same. Study the Theology of the Old and New Testaments and see that there is a great consistency in the theology of the book.
There is such a strong amount of evidence to substantiate the events of the Old Testament that no serious skeptic would continue to doubt the Bible if he were to honestly look at the evidence. The New Testament also has plenty of evidence to support its reliability. However, its primary evidence is based on direct, eyewitness testimony (1 Jn 1:1) and by careful historians like Luke.
Other ancient documents have very little surviving manuscripts, and even those that have survived date only a few hundred years after the manuscript was written. Caesar's Gallic Wars only has ten surviving manuscripts. Other works by ancient authors such as Plato and Aristotle do not have nearly as many surviving manuscripts, and yet no one questions their realibility.
There are dozens of archaeological evidences to support both the Old and New Testaments, and I will name just a few. For the Old Testament, one big archaeological find comes from the library of Ashurbanipal, where clay tablets have been found for the Epic of Gilgamesh, which is the Babylonian version of the Flood. Archaeologists have discovered many other versions of the flood account that have verified the Biblical account. Another evidence was found in Nineveh. When the old city was excavated, thousands of clay tablets were discovered that made up the personal library of King Ashurbanipal of Assyria, who reigned from 668-626 BC. Most significant was this find because the "Creation Epic" that confirms the Biblical account of creation was discovered there. But probably the most important archaeological discovery found was the Dead Sea Scrolls in 1947. The scrolls contain some 40,000 inscribed fragments which were found in the caves near the Dead Sea. What they did was confirm the Old Testament to be historically reliable. For the New Testament, one major discovery "The Pilate Stone", was found in Caesarea, which confirms that Pilate was a high ranking Roman official. There are plenty of other evidences to support the New Testament as well, and I have provided a list of some books at the end of this article.
Many prophecies that were written and then confirmed centuries later have given much evidence that the Bible was inspired by God. Refer to an earlier article that I wrote "Prophecies Fulfilled In Jesus."
The Bible has the power to change lives, which is known as the doctrine of sufficiency. Many lives have been changed by the reading of the Bible and mine being one of them. Christianity has changed the world, and some of these changes have been the abolition of slavery, women's rights, the sanctity of marriage and sex, advances in health care, education, science, and the arts as the book "How Christianity Changed the World" documents. Many sadly are ignorant of these facts and of world history before the influence of Christianity.
God Created the Earth in six literal Days
In the church today it is
to hold to a literal creation view in that God created
the earth in six literal 24-hour periods of time. Due
to the influence of Naturalism, many Christians have
come up with a number of theories as to how God
created the world. One popular view is called progressive
creationism and this means that days can be
understood as eons of time, and during the creation,
God stepped in at various times (one of which was when
he created Adam) and did His creation work. Another
popular view, theistic evolution, means that God
allowed and used evolution to make the creation event
happen. None of these views are Biblical, and anything
other than the literal interpretation of creation is
an attempt by man to harmonize the Bible's
Creation-Fall-Flood account (Gen 1-11) with the
popular millions of years view of the universe. Those
that believe in millions of years think that the rocks which contain fossil records formed over millions of
years, and all before God created Adam. There are many
problems with the millions of years view and any other
view other than the Biblical one as it does some
serious undermining of the Gospel. "For since death
came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes
also through a man. For as in Adam all die, so in
Christ all will be made alive"(1 Cor 15:21-22,NIV).
Jesus came to undo the work of Adam (1 Cor 15:45) and
died on the cross for the entire human race and all of
mankind (Gal 3:13, Col 1:22). A non-literal
interpretation of Genesis 1-3 not only undermines the
Gospel, but the rest of the Bible. If one cannot believe
in God creating the world in six 24-hour periods of
time, then certainly why believe the events of the
Exodus? Or why believe that the Gospels are literal
events that actually happened?
Why creationism happened in
six literal 24-hour periods of time
The Hebrew word for "Day" yom is first used here in Genesis and always refers to a 24-hour period of time. The original readers were not Hebrew scholars, nor scientists, but were ordinary people, and so the language Moses wrote was very clear to them. Moses probably never imagined that readers one day would find ways to re-interpret the plain meaning to support their Naturalistic presuppositions that they have approached the text with. The reason why the days referred here mean literal 24-hour periods of time is that the phrase "And there was evening and there was morning" is repeated at the end of each day, and this can only mean a literal 24-hour period of time. God knew that the pagan philosophers of antiquity would one day try and distort his record of creation to support pantheistic evolution, so He was careful to define His terms. Also Genesis was written as history and not poetry so Moses's intention when he wrote it was to communicate factual literal events. Plenty of Hebrew scholars agree with this. No hint of the text being an allegory exists in the text. It is odd that other passages in the Old Testament that speak of numbered literal days such as Numbers 7 are not disputed, even when the exact same structured sequence of days is used. We must let the Bible speak for itself, and not let science and man's opinion interpret the Bible. "For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it" (Ex 20:11 KJV).
I have looked at a number of books in the writing of
this article, and dozens of Christian apologists use secondary
evidences outside of the Bible to support their main arguments
for the God of the Bible. Authors that primarily use the Bible
are no doubt frowned upon by scientists and the
academic types, but its not like external evidences is going
to persuade them anyway, as they have been blinded by Satan
and cannot see the light of the gospel (2 Cor 4:4). Why
Christians primarily make external arguments from science to
support the Bible is inexplicable. There is plenty of
evidence in the creation that God is the author and creator of
it all, but the most important evidence comes from the Bible
itself, and the creation just confirms the Bible. In
Genesis 1:21 the text reads "And God created
great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the
waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every
winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good" (KJV).
The Hebrew verb used here is bara
which means a direct creation. The text rules out the
possibility that the creatures evolved through some age long
process as what is commonly believed in science. In
verse 21 the phrase "and every living creature" means that God
created every living being in the sea and on the land. God
created the sharks, all the fish, the whales, the crabs,
lobsters, the sea otters, the birds, the frogs, the tigers, and
even the spiders. They all were created at once and did not evolve
through Naturalistic processes as they were created by God.
Evidences of the creator in the creation
the frog because of all
his specialized features and abilities. This creature starts
off as an egg, then a tadpole, and then turns into a frog. The
animal lives mostly in ponds, swamps, lakes and some rivers.
Some species such as the wood frog are able to survive in very
cold regions like Alaska. The frog has special
proteins in its blood called nucleating proteins which cause
the water in the blood to freeze first. The frogs liver makes
large amounts of glucose which packs in the cells and props
them up. Then when spring comes, the frog's water in its blood
starts flowing again and the frog revives. How can
evolution explain such a miracle in nature? Only a Creator God could create such an ability in an animal to
survive after being frozen. The blood in humans lacks the
nucleating proteins found in these frogs and so when
we freeze we get frostbite. If we froze stiff, we would not
come back to life during the spring. There are many different
types and sizes of frogs in nature. Recently, scientists have
discovered the world's smallest frog which measures 8.6 mm in southern Papua New
Guinea. The creatures can leap 30 times
their size, which is an amazing feat. It is amazing that God
created such a fascinating creature at such a small size.
There are many other
creatures in the creation that give evidence to a creator,
and all curious should check them out. Skeptics with an
honest mind are welcome to look as well, however, since
unbelievers are blinded by Satan (2 Cor 4:4), they can only
be wakened by the power of the Holy Spirit (Eph 2:4-5, Tit
3:5). So no matter how much evidence one presents for God,
a blind skeptic will never see it.
Flood or Global Flood?
There is plenty of evidence in the world to support the world wide flood of Genesis. The book The Global Flood by Answers in Genesis has proved an invaluable resource on this topic and of which I will be using primarily in this section.
in the world for the Genesis Flood
#1— Fossils of sea creatures high above sea level
due to the oceans having flooded the continents.
All over the world there is evidence of sea creatures in the mountains. The creatures found up there are not typical ones to have gotten there by ordinary means. For example, certain types of shellfish are found in the Himalayas. Also the Grand Canyon has many marine fossils. How could they have gotten there as the Canyon is a mile above sea level? Only the flood of Genesis provides an explanation.
#2- Rapid burial of plants and animals
There are billions of nautiloid fossils found in a layer in the Grand Canyon. Other parts of the world such as chalk and coal beds testify to a major catastrophic destruction and burial.
#3- Rapidly deposited sediment layers spread across
There are rock layers that can be traced between continents, and the features that are in these rock layers do indicate that they were deposited rapidly. The Grand Canyon and the Tapeats Sandstone are some examples. The inclined layers in the Coconino Sandstone of the Grand Canyon are evidence of 10,000 cubic miles of sand that was deposited into the area by huge water currents during the Noah's Ark Flood.
#4- Rapid or no erosion between strata
There is plenty of evidence of rapid erosion in the rock layers. There is no evidence of "millions of years of evolution" in the rock layers in the Grand Canyon.
Evidence #5- Many strata laid down in rapid succession.
There are many rocks throughout the earth that did not break but folded which indicates a worldwide flood. The Tapeats Sandstone in the Grand Canyon is folded in a right angle without evidence of breaking, which is unusual for a rock.
#6- The Ark
If the flood were local and not global, then why the need for the ark? Noah could have fled to the mountains and could have made it in time. God warned Lot in Sodom, and he fled, so He could have done the same with Noah. If the flood were local, then why did God send animals to the ark? Certainly the Cheetah and other animals would have had no need for the ark as they can travel faster than a man. Or why did God send birds to the ark if the flood were local? Some birds can travel several hundred kilometers per day. And finally, if the flood were local, then God would be a liar and had broken his promise many times. Over the years there have been huge local floods in various parts of the world. For example Bangladesh is located next to India in Southeast Asia and there have been many floods in that region over the years. Also, in Europe in 2002 a major flood hit the Czech Republic, Austria, Germany, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Romania and Croatia. Read the following Wikipedia article "2002 European Floods."
The scripture shows that
the entire earth was flooded with water. Universal
language is used in the following passages to prove a
And they knew nothing
about what would happen until the flood came and took
them all away... (MT 24:39,NIV).
And the flood came and
destroyed them all (Lk 17:27,NKJV).
If he did not spare the
ancient world, but preserved Noah, a herald of
righteousness, with seven others; when he brought a flood
upon the world of the ungodly (2 Pet 2:5,ESV).
The world that then
existed was deluged with water and perished (1
By faith Noah being
warned by God concerning events as yet unseen in
reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his
household. By this he condemned the world and
became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith
Those that want to believe
in a local flood do so in their own ignorance and
unbelief. There is so much evidence in the world to
support the global flood that local flood advocates are
unaware of, or are in denial of the facts. The scripture
proves time and time again to be reliable and shows
clearly that there was a global flood. Those that have
been influenced by Naturalistic evolutionary theories come
to the Bible with these preconceived conclusions and
therefore will interpret the Bible to fit into their
man-made evolutionary theories, and, therefore it is no wonder
that they deny that the entire earth was filled with water
during Noah's day.
